Coal is the world’s largest source of energy for stationary applications. This role is expected to remain in this position for the foreseeable future, even though other sources, such as natural gas and renewables are expected to take an increasing share. The use of coal as a fuel for electricity generation in developing countries, in particular, is expected to show strong growth. Technology development is a key to capturing economic opportunities and minimising adverse environmental impacts.
